January's full Moon reaches peak illumination at 6:14 p.m. EST on Jan. 3, more than an hour after moonrise, so it should be well clear of the horizon. But astronomy aficionados don't need to be watching at that particular moment to see the Moon at its fullest.
The next full moon will occur on Tuesday, March 3. It will reach 100% illumination at 6:38 a.m. EST (1138 GMT). A total lunar eclipse will be visible to skywatchers across North America. To find out more, check out our March 2026 total lunar eclipse guide.
