MILAN (AP) — The trio of U.S. women targeting Olympic figure skating gold Tuesday night are not the dainty ice princesses of yesteryear. There's Amber Glenn, a 26-year-old powerhouse and LGBTQ+ rights activist whose career took off just when most figure skaters are contemplating retirement.
With her historic win, Liu has become the first American woman to win individual Olympic gold in figure skating since Sarah Hughes in 2002 — three years before she was even born.
The 26-year-old athlete came roaring back in the free skate portion of the women's singles competition.
Eteri Tutberidze, who received substantial criticism for her behavior in Beijing, is coaching two skaters in Milan.
At the Milan Cortina Games, currently underway, a new rule is in effect raising the minimum age for figure skating competitors to 17. It has far-reaching ramifications for the sport.

The children give their all night after night. They sit through hours of competition, waiting by the boards. Like other young kids, they fidget, whisper and occasionally lose focus until toys pelt the ice, sending them scrambling into action. The coaches overseeing them say they are remarkably disciplined.
"SKATE for Girls stands for Solving Kinesthetically And Transforming Education, and basically the mission of the organization is to combine figure skating and math to make STEM more interesting to girls," said Mayumi Suzue-Pan, founder of SKATE for Girls.
