New Comet! C/2024 E1 (Wierzchos) captured on Feb 1st from South Africa. The comet made its closest approach to the Sun on Jan 20th and is now emerging in the evening sky just after sunset. The comet is 93 million miles away and near its peak brightness. It’s quite bright at magnitude 6.5 and should be easy to see with binoculars. Comet 24P/Schaumasse still going strong!Captured on the morning of Jan 31st from my remote telescope in Texas. This is a time lapse showing motion over 2.5 hours. 24P is a periodic comet discovered in 1911, that orbits the Sun every 8 years. It’s currently 58 million miles from the Earth and is moving away from us at 1.5 miles/second. Its brightness is magnitude 9.8 and has started to dim as its distance increases.
